Compress without changing format
Sometimes you can't use WebP or AVIF: the CMS doesn't accept it, the image goes into an email or the client insists on JPG. Even so, most JPGs coming out of cameras, phones or editors are far from optimized: they use generic quantization tables, carry metadata and are often exported at quality 95–100.
ImageZap re-compresses with MozJPEG, Mozilla's encoder that applies optimized quantization, progressive encoding and Huffman optimization. The result is still a standard JPG, but usually 30–70% lighter depending on how the original was made.
How to compress JPG
- Add your JPGs. The output format is set to Original, so each JPG is re-compressed as JPG.
- Set JPEG quality: 80–82 for the web, 85–88 if the image is the star of the page.
- Optional: cap the max width (for example 2000 px) if the photos come from a camera.
- Check the result in the comparer and download.
If a file was already well optimized and re-compression saves nothing, ImageZap keeps the original automatically (you can turn this off under Advanced).
How low can you go
| Quality | Typical use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 90+ | Archiving, print | Small savings compared to a high-quality original |
| 82–88 | Hero photos | No visible difference at normal size |
| 75–80 | Blogs, galleries, ecommerce | The best balance for the web |
| 60–70 | Thumbnails | Acceptable at small sizes |
Remember that resizing saves more than lowering quality: a 4000 px photo displayed at 1200 px wastes over 90% of its pixels.
Frequently asked questions
Is the compression noticeable?
At quality 80 or above, on a normal screen, no. Use the comparer at 100% or 200% zoom to review delicate areas such as skies or skin.
Is EXIF data removed?
Yes, including GPS location and camera model. Orientation is applied first so the photo doesn't appear rotated.
Why doesn't a file get smaller?
Because it was already optimized. In that case the original is kept so it isn't made worse.
Can I compress hundreds of photos?
Yes, with no limit. You can drop whole folders.
