AVIF is the best-compressing format you can serve to every modern browser today. Convert your JPGs and compare the result pixel by pixel.

What you gain going from JPG to AVIF
AVIF uses techniques from the AV1 video codec to compress photos. In typical tests, an AVIF is 40–50% smaller than a JPEG at the same perceived quality, and around 20% smaller than WebP. The difference is most visible on large images with skies, skin or blurred backgrounds, where JPEG produces blocks and banding.
That makes AVIF the best candidate for a page's main image, which usually determines Largest Contentful Paint (LCP).
How to convert JPG to AVIF
- Add your JPGs by dragging, pasting or picking a folder.
- AVIF is selected. Quality 60 is a good starting point: on AVIF's scale it roughly matches a JPEG at 85.
- Wait for conversion to finish. AVIF is slower to encode than other formats; with large batches you'll see each image's progress.
- Open the comparer to review critical images and download.
Recommended settings
- Quality 50–55 for blog photos or galleries, where size matters most.
- Quality 60–65 for hero and product images.
- 4:4:4 (under Advanced) if the photo has overlaid text or saturated colors with sharp edges.
- Effort 4–6. Higher values shave off a bit more at the cost of time; worth it for a handful of key images.
Don't forget the fallback
AVIF works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 or later —around 95% of users. For the rest, also select JPEG or WebP as an output format and use the code generator: it writes a <picture> element where each browser picks the first format it understands.
Frequently asked questions
Why does AVIF take longer than WebP?
The AV1 encoder tries many more combinations to find the most compact representation. You can lower the effort under Advanced to speed things up at the cost of slightly larger files.
Is AVIF always smaller than JPG?
For photos, almost always. On very small or already heavily compressed images the gain can be minimal; ImageZap shows the exact percentage for each file so you can decide.
Can I open AVIF files on my computer?
Windows 11, macOS Ventura or later, Android 12+ and iOS 16+ open them natively, as do most browsers. Some older editors may need a plug-in.
Does AVIF support transparency?
Yes, which also makes it a good alternative to PNG for images with an alpha channel.
