Convert PNG to AVIF

Replace heavy PNGs with AVIF that keeps the alpha channel. Ideal for illustrations, cut-out photos and products on transparent backgrounds.

When it makes sense to go from PNG to AVIF

Many sites use PNG for one reason only: transparency. Cut-out product photos, illustrations with shadows or characters on transparent backgrounds end up weighing several megabytes. AVIF supports an alpha channel with lossy compression, so it can shrink those files by 80–90% without any visible difference.

For screenshots or graphics with small text, however, PNG to WebP in lossless mode or 4:4:4 subsampling is usually a better fit.

Steps

  1. Add your PNGs.
  2. With AVIF selected, start at quality 60–70. Illustrations with flat colors handle low values well; smooth gradients appreciate a bit more.
  3. If the image has text, thin lines or very saturated colors, open Advanced and choose 4:4:4.
  4. Check transparent edges in the comparer at 200% zoom.
  5. Download, or also select WebP to have a fallback.

Edges, shadows and the alpha channel

AVIF compresses the alpha channel independently from color. Soft shadows hold up well, but one-pixel edges may get slightly softened. If you work with icons or pixel art, try Lossless: lossless AVIF doesn't always beat optimized PNG, and ImageZap shows the exact size so you can compare.

Compatibility

AVIF with transparency works in every modern browser. If the image will be used outside the web —in a presentation, an email or an old design tool— keep a PNG version as well.

Frequently asked questions

Does AVIF keep PNG transparency?

Yes. The alpha channel is preserved and you can check it in the checkerboard preview.

What's lighter for a logo, AVIF or SVG?

If you have the logo as a vector, SVG is almost always lighter and sharp at any size. AVIF makes sense for complex illustrations or photos.

Can I convert animated PNGs to AVIF?

ImageZap processes the first frame. For animations, convert to video (MP4 or WebM), which is far more efficient than any animated image format.

Why does my AVIF have slightly blurry edges?

That's 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. Switch to 4:4:4 under Advanced or raise the quality.
