PNG to WebP: the switch with the biggest savings
PNG is a lossless format designed to preserve every pixel. That makes it great for editing but very heavy for publishing, especially when it's used for photos or illustrations with gradients. WebP supports transparency in both lossy and lossless modes, so it's the natural replacement for PNG on the web.
Savings depend on the content:
- Photos or illustrations saved as PNG: with lossy WebP it's common to shrink files by 70–90%.
- Screenshots, icons and flat graphics: with lossless WebP typical savings are around 25% versus PNG, with identical pixels.
How to do it
- Add your PNG files (drag, paste or pick a folder).
- Keep WebP as the output format.
- Choose the mode:
- For photos and illustrations, keep lossy compression at quality 80–85.
- For screenshots, logos or text, turn on Lossless.
- Check transparent edges in the comparer (the checkerboard background reveals the alpha channel) and download.
Transparency and edges
Lossy WebP compresses the alpha channel separately, so soft shadows and feathered edges are preserved well. If you notice halos on very thin edges over colored backgrounds, turn on 4:4:4 subsampling under Advanced or use lossless mode.
When not to convert to WebP
If the destination is a design tool or a system that doesn't accept WebP (some email marketing platforms, for example), keep PNG and optimize it with Compress PNG. And if it's a vector logo, consider SVG: it'll be sharper and almost always lighter.
Frequently asked questions
Does WebP keep PNG transparency?
Yes, in both lossy and lossless modes. The alpha channel is preserved and you can check it in the checkerboard preview.
What's better for a screenshot, PNG or lossless WebP?
Lossless WebP: pixels are identical and the file is usually around 25% smaller.
Can I convert PNG to WebP and AVIF at the same time?
Yes. Select both formats and you'll get both files for each image; the ZIP separates them into folders.
Why is my WebP bigger than the PNG?
It happens with very simple graphics (few colors, large flat areas) that PNG already compresses very well. Try lossless mode, or use the Original format with Keep original if smaller.
