When you need to go from AVIF to JPG
More and more websites serve images as AVIF, and when you save them from the browser you get an .avif file. Modern browsers and recent operating systems open it fine, but there are still cases where it fails:
- Older image editors or ones without the right plug-in.
- Print services, marketplaces or forms that only accept JPG/PNG.
- Email clients and some messaging apps.
- Operating systems older than Windows 11 or macOS Ventura.
Converting to JPG solves all of these.
How to convert AVIF to JPG
- Add your
.aviffiles. If your browser can't read them, ImageZap uses its own WebAssembly decoder. - JPEG is selected; use quality 85 as a general value.
- If the image has transparency, choose the background color under Advanced.
- Download the JPGs individually or as a ZIP.
What to know about file size
The resulting JPG will be larger than the original AVIF, often twice the size or more. AVIF is much more efficient; when converting you prioritize compatibility. If you need broad compatibility with less weight, consider WebP as a middle ground.
HDR and wide color
Some AVIFs contain HDR or wide-gamut information (10–12 bits). Standard JPG is 8-bit sRGB, so the image is converted to that space. For everyday photos you won't notice; for professional HDR material, keep the original.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert several AVIFs to JPG at once?
Yes, with no quantity limit. Drop a whole folder if you like.
Is quality lost?
There's another round of compression, but at quality 85 or higher the difference is negligible.
What if I prefer PNG?
Select PNG as the output format. It keeps transparency, although the file will be considerably larger.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in the browser, even on phones.
